I don't get it

So, I was out and about last week, and I saw this billboard. (Sorry about the quality. Photography skills are a work in progress). I'm not saying Pres. Harrison is unimportant or anything. I'm sure he did great things and just had the misfortune of being president in between the Revolutionary war and the Civil War, and not being Andrew Jackson, so no one knows who he is. Also, he was only president for 32 days, so he probably didn't do much. I'm down with learning about him, but what I don't understand is who is so concerned with Harrison's uncelebrated presidential legacy that they are paying for billboards? An extremely passionate history teacher? Harrison descendant? Political group with some very obscure platform they are pushing? Bored millionaire looking for a tax write-off? William Harrison with a time machine? I'm open to ideas.

I saw a sign

I've been going through old photos (old being within the last 5 years, which is not that old. We're not talking black and white, or even pre-digital here. I don't even know why I said old. Seriously) to pick some for my digital photo frame (thanks Renegades!)  and came across some signs that I've taken pictures of. Because sometimes, signs are really funny. So, here is the latest in my sign gallery, from the lovely location of Mackinac Island (taken last year when I was there for a conference. See! Not even old!):

(For the record, Doghouse is a food stand that sells hot dogs. But don't you just love the sign)

You pretty much have two food options on Mackinac. American pub and Fudge. Some brave soul decided to introduce a third option, but most visitors weren't sold on it. It was the only uncrowded dining establishment while I was on the island. The name is clever, but most people just don't say, "You know what I could really go for? A salad bar, with some frozen yogurt afterwards."

There's a mathematical/existential conundrum for you.

And this one, on the way back from Mackinac. I think that this policy is more than just, and should possibly be introduced in more areas of society. Although, we better be clear on the meaning of "unattended". Because sometimes, life happens.

That's all for this edition of Signs I saw. But stay tuned!

Just because

One of my goals this year is to improve my photography skills. So, I tend to carry my camera a lot. (Well, for that, and to prevent a certain 3-year old from using it as his toy). It comes in handy when you come across odd things, like tic-tac-toe boards in the sky:

It is also great to have on hand when I come across funny signs. Every now and then, you just come across a sign that is noteworthy. Like this one:

I've never been in a Wheel Control Zone before. Well, before I saw this, that is.

I also saw this sign, which I couldn't pass up. I hope someday, someone says that about the Cake Fairy someday.

So, that is some of the fun I've been having with pictures lately. I know I'm not an amazing photographer, but I have been having fun, and at some point, I'll find some of my really good ones and post them.

O Canada

If you are looking for excitement and adventure, then Windsor, Ontario, is the place for you. Only a trip across the Ambassador bridge, this delightful city of 200,000+ and home of the prestigious University of Windsor has all the fun you could ever want.

Visitors to this lovely town will enjoy a nice walk along the Detroit River and get the best view of Detroit that the planet has to offer. One can glimpse the Detroit skyline, as well as enjoying the local cruise lines.

One should always visit the local attractions, and Windsor is no exception. To get a flavor of the local culture, one should definitely take a tour of the local sign exhibits, including the:

the Fill-in-the-Blank collection,
Fill-in-the-Blank collection,
the Riddle-Me-This Collection,
and, of course, the infamous Viciously-Cruel-Fountain-Designer-and-Other-Inhumanities collection.

Model of the Francois Baby House.
Another local cultural attraction one should not miss is the renowned Francois Baby House.  This fine community museum presents the history of the House, such as its role in a planned invasion of Michigan and other areas of the US, and other fascinating exhibits covering the magic community in Windsor, the Windsor Federation of Musicians, and a sampling of miniatures. Also among the museum's offerings is a cabinet of oddities, such as a fine piece of art made entirely of human hair and an actual scalp, among other strangely bizarre artifacts. Children and adults will love the hands-on portion of the museum, and will even have a chance to leave behind a hand of their own. Be sure to swing by the museum's gift shop for some excellent souvenirs for your friends back home.

Naturally, while traveling one must partake of the native cuisine. Canada is no exception and visitors should be sure to try out Pho Xic Lo, one of the finest Vietnamese restaurants Windsor has to offer. Other exotic food selections include a fabulous variety of Cadbury bars, and one should not miss out on the bagged milk.

For the more intellectually minded traveler, you can feast upon the fine body of Canadian-ish literature at the annual Terry Fox Giant Used Book Sale*.

Included in our Windsor package is the supremely successful language course, "Learn to speak Canadian in 3 Words or Less," where you will learn to properly pronounce about and gain the essential knowledge of Canadian grammar, eh.

So sign up for your Windsor Travel Experience today, and take the trip of a lifetime!

(Or, at least the trip of weekend.)

*Note: Books may or may not actually be giant.
Guests to Windsor should note that passports are required to enter the country. Some interrogation and mild torture may occur.
It should be further noted that entry to Windsor is limited to those who can successfully find their way into the country. All maps, compasses and GPS are banned in the attempt to enter. Homing pigeons, however, are allowed.

The Windsor Travel Guide is brought to you by:
